Case Study: 11H21 Photography and Fine Art Prints
11H21 is a photographic studio and fine-art print imprint operating across The Hague and Cape Town; selling archival fine art prints online while running a parallel commissioned photography practice. The site needed to do both simultaneously; ecommerce and portfolio; without either compromising the other.
Built on Shopify's Dawn theme, the site uses custom Liquid code blocks throughout to achieve a look and layout that reads as genuinely bespoke rather than off-the-shelf. Product pages are structured and templated by product type; print editions get different layout logic to photowalks or licensing pages; each optimised for how that specific content is actually browsed and purchased.
The static pages are a particular strength of this build: each documentary project, print series and service category lives on a fully designed, content-rich page with its own SEO strategy, heading hierarchy and schema markup; functioning as a proper landing page rather than a thin navigation endpoint.
The 11H21 site carries a comprehensive and layered schema stack: WebSite, Organization and Person entities establish the brand and authorship; ImageGallery markup makes the photography indexable as structured visual content; FAQPage schema is implemented sitewide to capture AI answer engine traffic (GEO); and product pages carry Product schema with pricing, availability and review data.
Every page has its own keyword-researched meta title and description. Internal linking is structured as a deliberate funnel; from category landing pages to collection pages to individual product or project pages; giving both search engines and visitors a clear onward path at every level.
GEO optimisation is built into the copy throughout; structured as direct, factual answers to the questions a potential client or collector would actually ask. This means the site performs in AI-powered search results and assistant responses; not just in traditional search rankings.
Shopify is often overlooked for creative practices that don't think of themselves as primarily ecommerce businesses. That's a mistake. For a photographer selling prints, a studio offering services, or a designer selling both products and consultancy; Shopify's combination of robust commerce infrastructure, flexible page building and strong hosting performance makes it a serious platform for a serious practice.
The key is knowing how to push it beyond its defaults. Custom Liquid sections give you layout and design control that the standard theme editor can't provide. Bespoke static pages let you build the portfolio and editorial presence that Shopify's commerce-first architecture doesn't naturally accommodate. The result is a site that looks and feels like a creative studio; and works like a proper online business.
I've built Shopify sites for photographers, artists, designers and independent studios. Every build starts with understanding what the business actually needs; and ends with a site that earns its keep.
